Inclined walls and high slabs cost-effectively formed

Inclined facades and twisting cantilevered structures are the visible features of this spectacular project which is located in the centre of Vienna and directly adjoining the Danube Canal. Offices, suites and apartments as well as restaurants and eateries -so-called Schanigärten - can be found in this luxurious multi-storey complex which was opened at the end of 2005. Three structures, carried by 15 slender columns, appear to wind their way around and over the old Stadtbahnbogen building. The Pritzker Prize winning architect, Zaha Hadid, has realized a bold construction here which “touches the limit of statical possibilities”.

The special challenge for Bilfinger Berger was to construct two apartment floors at the dizzy height of eleven metres. The partially inclined reinforced concrete walls on the inside and outside required a well thought-out technical formwork solution. In PERI, the contractor found the ideal partner for this task. The loads from the slabs on three floors totalling 90 cm, were cost-effectively and safely transferred using the high load-bearing MULTIPROP towers. The possibility of being able to flexibly adapt the MULTIPROP support to the geometry and respective load cases proved to be a particular advantage.

The external and internal wall inclinations, which differed considerably by anything up to 20 degrees, were cost-effectively constructed using TRIO panel formwork on FB 180 folding platforms. The large bracket spacings and few required components resulted in cost savings for both labour and materials.

“For this extraordinary construction, PERI provided the optimal solution with the MULTIPROP system. The separate casting method with single supports and MRK frames allowed easy adjustment to be made to all height offsets and the inclined concrete columns.”
