Airport Terminal, Barcelona, Spain

Large-scale project cost-effectively completed

Under the slogan “An Airport for the New Millenium”, the existing airport close to the Catalan capital on the Mediterranean coast is gradually being extended. In the process, capacity is to be doubled to 50 million passengers annually. The most important element was the construction of the new passenger terminal: the south terminal. The modern, light-flooded complex has five main levels and 55 direct access possibilities in order to ensure a smooth and problem- free check in process.

In a mere two-year construction phase, structural work for the main building with three docks, a multi-storey car park and a utilities building was completed. Scheduling the large quantities of materials required for the concreting work was an immense challenge. The fact that PERI was available as an experienced partner for all formwork and scaffolding requirements also brought crucial advantages for ensuring operations were carried out smoothly in such a largescale project.

The check-in hall alone measures an enormous 460 m x 230 m. For the different wall heights, ranging between 4.70 m and 10.50 m, fast shuttering times could be achieved with the TRIO panel formwork. PERI UP reinforcement scaffold was available for forming, reinforcement and concreting work required for the up to 2 m thick reinforced concrete walls.

With the SKYDECK panel slab formwork, along with customized slab tables comprising of rentable system components, the up to 2.30 m thick reinforced concrete slabs could be cost-effectively formed. Thus, tables of up to 6.00 m x 2.50 m for 1.50 m thick slabs and 8.90 m clear floor height were designed which could be efficiently moved in spite of their enormous dimensions. Load transfer for the up to 6.50 m floor heights was carried out using MULTIPROP slab props. For larger heights, individual props were simply connected with MRK frames to form load-bearing towers. In addition, spatial supporting formwork could be mounted to the PERI UP modular scaffold.
