Fairlands Administration Building, Johannesburg, South Africa
4,000 m² slab area per week with SKYDECK
The new administrative complex, in the northwest of Johannesburg, offers around 80,000 m² office and distribution area as well as 2,000 car parking spaces on a further 80,000 m². The multi-storey building, with generously-sized dimensions of almost 350 m x 160 m, features three aboveground level floors and two underground parking levels.
A total of four centrally-placed light courtyards, so-called atriums, flood the building with daylight and, together with the integrated stairwells, present a vertically arranged distribution centre.
Up to 400 m³ of concrete had to be processed daily during peak periods in order to maintain the very tight construction schedule. Altogether, 130,000 m² of floor slabs, with thicknesses ranging between 30 cm and 38 cm, were to be installed within a very short period of time. Clear room heights were anything up to 4.20 m.
With the SKYDECK panel slab formwork, concreting cycles totalling over 2,000 m² could be efficiently shuttered. The SKYDECK drophead system allowed early striking to take place and resulted in reducing on-site requirements of main beams and panels.
Lightweight and load-bearing MULTIPROP aluminium props, as well as PEP 30 steel props, ensured easy assembly and a safe transfer of loads. The MULTIPROP 480, with an adjustment height range of 2.60 m to 4.80 m, was used for a wide number of applications which cut down on the number of individual components required on-site.

Project Manager
“We decided to use the SKYDECK system due to the very tight construction schedule. This meant we were able to achieve our goal of concreting a slab area of 4,000 m² per week. For construction of these fl oors, the SKYDECK is simply fantastic.”
