PERI SKYDECK Aluminium panel formwork system Slab Forming made quick and easy
Edinburgh University has invested £21m on upgraded student accommodation at its Pollock Halls of Residence on the edge of Holyrood Park.
The project involved the phased construction of 520 en-suite student bedrooms.
Balfour Beatty has enjoyed a good working relationship with the University of Edinburgh and were once again nominated as main contractor. They in turn nominated PERI Ltd. as formwork supplier for this traditionally constructed 11,000 m³ concrete framed building.
A number of PERI systems were used on this project including, TRIO Column for rectangular columns, TRIO 330 for core walls and SRS for the circular columns. However, the principle system used was SKYDECK, PERI''s light weight aluminium slab formwork.
SKYDECK was chosen because of its speed of erection and built in safety features. Despite a difficult footprint peppered with a number of shear walls and lift cores an average of 6 m² per man hour was achieved during the erection and stripping phases. All panels were erected from below using a mobile access tower. SKYDECK platforms provided quick and efficient safety access at the building perimeter.
The ease of use and early strike capabilities of the SKYDECK system allowed Balfour Beatty to significantly reduce the number of joiners normally required for a traditional table/static solution. Each floor to floor cycle was completed in a three week cycle, this, combined with other time saving benefits allowed the main frame to be completed three weeks ahead of the target programme.
