Christmas trees in Lisbon and Warsaw
Europe´s tallest Christmas trees
erected with PERI UP scaffold construction
This year, the two tallest Christmas trees in Europe can be admired in Lisbon and Warsaw. With an overall height of 72 metres they are as high as a 20-storey highrise building. Around 2 million lights neatly hide the fact that these trees were created using scaffolding materials. On 19th November, the tree in the Portuguese capital, located on the famous Praça do Comércio, was officially handed over in a colourful ceremony, witnessed by a crowd of about 15,000 spectators. Similar celebrations had been planned for 6th December in Poland.
On a 23-metre diameter surface area, the upward tapering towers comprising of universal PERI UP Rosett modular scaffolding system were erected, in each case, in a period of only two weeks. The required stability was achieved by using 150 tonnes of ballast.
Portuguese and Polish PERI engineers designed these remarkable scaffold constructions in an exemplary demonstration of European teamwork. At the site, six circular-shaped extension units, each 7.50 metres high, were safely pre-assembled on the ground. The high node rigidity of the PERI UP ledger connections provided the required stability and torsional stiffness in order that the units could be positioned on the top of the almost 20-metre high basis using a mobile crane.
Due to the limited amount of space in the inner-city area, a professional logistics operation was required. In this respect, the PERI pallets proved to be a big advantage. The outline of the PERI UP vertical standard nodes have a special form which allow a minimum of stacking volumes. This meant that cost-effective transportation of scaffold materials could be achieved.
