PERI systems and pro-active approach
provided the right formwork solution
The new City of Edinburgh Council Offices are being constructed by PJ Carey (Contractors) Ltd for Miller Construction Ltd using a range of PERI formwork & falsework systems. Directly adjacent to the Waverley Station the new building will eventually replace the existing council offices at Waterloo Place.
The concrete frame construction of these new council offices consists of two underground car parking levels and four levels of office space above.
All of the available site space was taken up by the footprint of the structure. Equipment deliveries therefore had to be carefully planned and on an ‘as required’ basis.
“PERI’s pro-active input led to a combined solution to a particularly difficult and intricate formwork detail. Our relationship, built up over number of years, provided the ability to work together in developing the right solution.”
In the underground car park levels access was restricted and the use of conventional tables was ruled out as they would have become trapped following construction. PERI SKYDECK aluminium panel slab formwork system was chosen to construct the roof slabs because of its ease of use, speed of construction and lack of dependability on craneage.
The high quality surface finish specified for the upper office exposed columns and slabs with featured curved beam sides required the use of a different system. VARIO Column formwork was used above level one to produce the required blemish free finish. Some column shapes were as a parallellagram and awkward to construct. These were pre-fabricated at PERI’s fabrication workshop in Rugby and delivered to site as necessary.
From level one and above 6m x 3m MULTIPROP tables were used with 3m x 1.5m 21mm combi mirror fairfaced plywood to give the required finish to soffit and to line up with curved fibreglass moulds to the vaulted ceiling. Additional MULTIPROP beam tables provide support for the fibreglass moulds.
This was by no means a straightforward project with the array of downstand beams and changes in angle. However, in combination PERI and PJ Carey design engineers proposed what proved to be a suitable and working solution and in combination with fast and efficient use of kit has helped maintain programme.
